Welcome to the Solsoft Computers newsletter for December.
The bogus phone call purporting to come from Microsoft is again raising its ugly head. You are told you’ve got problems with your PC and would you mind connecting to a website for the operative to take control of your PC. What then happens is your operating system is upgraded and a copy of MS Office 2011 is installed, generally for the princely sum of £400 or so. The other approach is to tell you your PC is riddled with viruses but, surprise surprise, they can remove these threats for you!!
Just put the phone down. Microsoft DO NOT ring people and try and extract money. Don’t be fooled.
Another major issue at the moment is the rising prices of hard drives. The floods in the far east have halved production and prices are around 40 – 50% above normal. This shortage will continue into the 1st quarter of 2012, so if you can put off that upgrade until April next year then do so. Saying that, we do have a few 1Tb at reasonable prices, and laptop drives have not been so badly hit – yet.
Just to let you know, in January we are opening our on-line shop, 1500 items or more available with very competitive pricing. We envisage items will be up to 10 – 15% cheaper than stock items and we will provide a ‘collect-in-store’ for those not at home during the day. We believe a delivery charge of £4.95 will be standard for all items. Might be worth a look anyway, and reminder will be sent to all subscribers on opening day.
Laptop repairs are on the increase, so to help keep costs down we are offering a fitting service for screens. Procure the screen yourself then pop it in for us to fit for £35.00 including VAT. Most screens are available from Ebay (UK) with a full 12 month warranty, but if in doubt, please ask.
